History & Heritage

MacDermid was founded in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1922 as a small metal finishing business by Archie J. MacDermid. MacDermid expanded from its metal finishing roots into plating on plastics and electronics and extended globally into Europe and Asia. MacDermid invested in several acquisitions, expanding into new markets including printing with the production of textile blankets in 1945, the origins of our Graphics Solutions business. From 1995 to 1999, mergers and acquisitions including W.R. Grace, Hercules and Polyfibron formed MacDermid Printing Solutions.

MacDermid Printing Solutions offered cutting edge platemaking technology and equipment for every package printing application. We introduced LUX® Lamination, an innovative flat-top dot technology, in 2010, and a new identity as MacDermid Graphics Solutions in 2016.

Today, MacDermid Graphics Solutions is recognized as a worldwide leader in the development, manufacture, and marketing of a full range of packaging plate solutions including analog sheet, digital sheet, liquid photopolymer, as well as the award-winning LUX ITPTM technology for flat-top dots in-the-plate and LAVA® thermal process. In addition to packaging plate solutions, MacDermid Graphics Solutions offers publication and coating plates. Our products and chemistries are utilized in flexographic printing applications to produce high quality graphics in the flexible packaging; folding carton; corrugated; tags & labels; and newspaper markets.
