MacDermid was founded in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1922 by a Scottish immigrant named Archie J. MacDermid. Archie sold the company to the employees, led by Harold Leever, in 1959. Harold joined the company in 1938 as its first R&D chemist and rose through the ranks to become the legendary and visionary Chairman. He retired after 60 years of service to the company. Harold believed that people were the company's most important asset. Harold had a deep respect and affection for the "family" of workers. He left us with a strong legacy of caring about our employees, and a well-stated Philosophy that outlines our core beliefs.
In the 60s and 70s, MacDermid expanded from its metal finishing roots into plating on plastics and electronics, and also expanded globally into Europe and Asia. Beginning in the mid-80s Macdermid invested in a number of acquisitions increasing its reach into the current buisness and expanded into new markets.
Following in his father's footsteps, Dan Leever joined the company in 1982, was made CEO in 1990, and Chairman in 1998.
